What is a Community Investment Trust?#

A Community Investment Trust (CIT) is a way for people in a neighborhood to invest together in local real estate. Instead of outside developers buying up property, residents and community members pool small, affordable contributions to collectively purchase and own buildings in their area.

This means the community — not outside investors — decides what happens with the property. The model helps local residents build wealth over time while keeping space available and affordable for small businesses and other community uses.

CITs bring together a range of participants: everyday residents, nonprofit organizations, local government agencies, and real estate professionals — all working toward development that benefits the people who already live and work in the neighborhood.
